PhD Meeting 2018
XXVIII PhD Student Meeting in Berlin
The XXVIII PhD meeting in hydrogeology was held in Berlin on June 7th and 8th 2018 at the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin. The first day was dedicated to water infrastructure of Berlin. The Berlin Water Works (Berliner Wasserbetriebe) facilitated excursions to the surface water treatment plant (Oberflächenwasseraufbereitungsanlage) Tegel and the building site of a sewer with storage capacity and overflow below the Mauerpark (Baustelle zur Errichtung eines Stauraumkanals unter dem Mauerpark). Prof. Dr. Michael Schneider (FU Berlin) completed the first day with a lecture on Berlin’s hydrogeology with special focus on bank filtration.
The second day was filled with oral and poster presentations of the delegates. 30 PhD students from Iran, Columbia and Germany discussed their fields of research ranging from geothermal, groundwater modelling, coastal aquifers and salt water intrusions, characterisation and modelling of seepage using stable isotopes, sulfate and pesticides in groundwater, karst hydrogeology to water infrastructure. The format of the meeting enabled intensive exchange among the delegates and met their approval.
Financial support was provided by the German IAH Chapter (IAH-D), the Expert Group of Hydrogeology in the German Geological Society (Fachsektion Hydrogeologie in der Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft, FH-DGGV) and the Ernst-Reuter-Stiftung. For organisational efforts we are indebted to Babette Gabriel und Theresa Frommen (FU Berlin).
